Habing) Date: Tue, 02 Jul 2002 10:13:51 -0500 Subject: [OAI-general] Announcing ZMARCO 0.1 (Z39.50, MARC record, OAI data provider) Message-ID: <3D21C32F.690BBA0F@uiuc.edu> Hi all, We have just made a beta release of ZMARCO, our Z39.50, MARC record, OAI data provider. It is available from SourceForge at http://zmarco.sourceforge.net/ -- from this page refer to the README for details. ZMARCO is an Open Archive Initiative Protocol for Metadata Harvesting (OAI-PMH) 2.0 compliant data provider. The 'Z' in ZMARCO stands for Z39.50; 'MARC' stands for MAchine-Readable Cataloging; and the 'O' stands for OAI, as in the Open Archives Inititive. Essentially ZMARCO allows MARC records which are already available through a Z39.50 server to relatively easily be made available via the OAI-PMH. Among the supported metadata formats are Dublin Core, MARCXML, and MODS. We have currently only tested ZMARCO using a subset (about 3,000,000 records) from the University of Illinois' online library catalog, and it works OK (at least with only us harvesting it). If anyone tries it with other Z39.50 servers, please let us know how it works. >From the README file: Platform and Environment ------------------------ Windows 2000 Internet Information Server 5 (IIS 5) Active Server Pages (ASP) Accessible Z39.50 Server supporting the following features: USmarc Record Syntax (may be extended to support other MARC syntaxes in the future) Bib-1 Use Attribute 31, Publication Date (Year) Bib-1 Use Attribute 12, Control Number No limit on the number search hits available for one query Kind Regards, Tom -- Thomas Habing Research Programmer, Digital Library Projects University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign 155 Grainger Engineering Library Information Center, MC-274 thabing@uiuc.edu, (217) 244-4425 http://dli.grainger.uiuc.edu From anolbrec@ulb.ac.be Wed Jul 3 08:09:13 2002 From: anolbrec@ulb.ac.be (Anne Sophie Olbrechts) Date: Wed, 3 Jul 2002 09:09:13 +0200 (MET DST) Subject: [OAI-general] unsuscribe Message-ID: <200207030709.JAA20203@mach.vub.ac.be> Anne-Sophie Olbrechts From nfdarbe@yahoo.com Wed Jul 3 18:44:25 2002 From: nfdarbe@yahoo.com (Neva Darbe) Date: Wed, 3 Jul 2002 10:44:25 -0700 (PDT) Subject: [OAI-general] unsuscribe Message-ID: <20020703174425.76694.qmail@web14106.mail.yahoo.com> --0-1956537897-1025718265=:73877 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii nfdarbe --------------------------------- Do You Yahoo!? new   Sell you car, by placing a classified ad on Yahoo India Autos . It's Free!!    --0-2091897684-1026116413=:56066-- From lagoze@cs.cornell.edu Mon Jul 8 17:43:57 2002 From: lagoze@cs.cornell.edu (Carl Lagoze) Date: Mon, 8 Jul 2002 12:43:57 -0400 Subject: [OAI-general] Unsubscribing to the lists Message-ID: <706871B20764CD449DB0E8E3D81C4D4302E6E143@opus.cs.cornell.edu> Dear all, Recently there has been a rash of "please unsubscribe me" messages posted to the entire oai-general and/or oai-implementers lists. Please DO NOT post these messages to the entire list. It effectively spams the mailboxes of many people worldwide who use these lists to keep track of oai related activities. I don't think anyone is anxious to add to the spam overload on the net. The proper way to unsubscribe to the lists is to visit either: http://oaisrv.nsdl.cornell.edu/mailman/listinfo/oai-general or http://oaisrv.nsdl.cornell.edu/mailman/listinfo/oai-implementers Go to the bottom of that page to the section labeled oai-{general or implementers} subscribers, enter your email address in the box under "change your subscriptions options". Another page will then come up with which you can cancel your subscription, upon entering your list password. If you have forgotten your list password, you can also use that page to retrieve it. If you have problems with this procedure, then send mail ONLY to openarchives@openarchives.org. Again, DO NOT post unsubscribe messages to the entire list. Thanks, Carl Lagoze From lagoze@cs.cornell.edu Fri Jul 12 11:28:35 2002 From: lagoze@cs.cornell.edu (Carl Lagoze) Date: Fri, 12 Jul 2002 06:28:35 -0400 Subject: [OAI-general] Citebase Survey Message-ID: <706871B20764CD449DB0E8E3D81C4D4302BDADD4@opus.cs.cornell.edu> A recent report on the emergence of 'superarchives' of institutional scholarly output in the Chronicle of Higher Education pointed out that 'new search tools would need to be developed to make full use of the (OAI) metadata tags' +AFs-see ref. below+AF0-. As list readers know, OAI repositories are already searchable using services such as Arc, OAIster and My.OAI. A new OAI search service goes further. As well as OAI metadata, Citebase harvests reference lists from the largest OAI archives such as arXiv, which it uses to present citation-ranked search. For users, Citebase allows results to be ordered by selectable criteria, such as how many times a paper has been cited in the searchable literature. OAI recognises that effective search services are vital in promoting wider use of OAI repositories. Authors of papers in open archives can now benefit from visibility and impact in the same way as they do from journal publication. First we have to assure that such services will be useful and usable to all academic users, so we are asking the OAI community to try Citebase and comment on it. To guide you a Web form takes you through a short exercise highlighting the principal features. The form can be found (via redirect) at http://citebase.eprints.org/survey/ In future Citebase need not be restricted to a few archives but will also cover the emerging 'superarchives'. Citebase is produced as part of the Open Citation project, funded by the Joint NSF - JISC International Digital Libraries Research Programme. +AFs-ref.+AF0- JEFFREY R.
